In an interview with D.it Joe Bastianich – in his role as judge on “Masterchef Italy” – discusses various aspects of food. He says that food preparation and traditions, besides satisfying the necessity of nutrition, are an expression of a country’s culture and history. This is especially true in Italy, as opposed to the United States where “cuisine” is something relatively new. Food has now also become a popular business but, according to Bastianich, it can only be a successful business if it incorporates culture and interprets it.

From November 10 to 13 NICE is in New York at the Anthology Film Archives on 2nd Avenue. Six NY film premieres will be featured – including Lucchetti’s La nostra vita and Molaioli’s Il gioiellino. From September 13 to 16 Barilla, the pasta company, is sponsoring an Italian food festival that will take place in a temporary structure in Central Park. There will be cooking demonstrations and food to sample. Tickets are $5 and the proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank for New York City. Barilla is also sponsoring Andrea Bocelli’s Sept. 15 concert in the Park.
Starting January 28th Bologna is hosting a modern art fair. This article from La Repubblica describes the various installations that are set up in the center of the city. Organizers are encouraging visitors who come to view the contemporary pieces to also visit the historic sites that are hosting them. The new is thus linked to the old and it’s an occasion for collectors and appreciators of modern art to learn about the old city of Bologna.
