From November 10 to 13 NICE is in New York at the Anthology Film Archives on 2nd Avenue.  Six NY film premieres will be featured – including Lucchetti’s La nostra vita and Molaioli’s Il gioiellino. The showings will be followed by a Q and A session with the films’ directors.  For the full program call Maya at 617-820-9284.

Film viewing followed by discussion and refreshments

See I Vicerè (directed by Roberto Faenza in 2007) on Wednesday August 24th at 5:00.  The film will be followed by un aperitivo e chiacchiere in italiano.

This movie is based on Federico De Roberto’s 1894 novel of the same title.  It tells the story, through the noble Uzeda family of Catania, of Sicily during the unification of Italy.  It is full of conflict and intrigue and political references that have many contemporary echoes.

Francesco Rosi films at BAM

BAM Cinèmatek’s Francesco Rosi series will end on August 21st.  Upcoming films are Dimenticare Palermo, Diario napoletano, Tre fratelli and, on Saturday and Sunday respectively, Cadaveri eccellenti and Cristo si è fermato a Eboli.  Cadaveri eccellenti is based on a Leonardo Sciascia novel and features an excellent Lino Ventura as a dogged police detective uncovering corruption while investigating a series of murders.  Rosi’s best-known film is probably Cristo based on Carlo Levi’s novel about his exile, at the time of fascism, to a remote town in Lucania.  Rosi recreates Levi’s evocative descriptions of the time, the area and its people beautifully.
